{"id":2024,"date":"2021-06-15T10:24:08","date_gmt":"2021-06-15T09:24:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.iita.org\/?p=2024"},"modified":"2021-06-16T16:53:43","modified_gmt":"2021-06-16T15:53:43","slug":"iita-and-touton-ltd-coffee-farmer-diversification-strategies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.iita.org\/iita-and-touton-ltd-coffee-farmer-diversification-strategies\/","title":{"rendered":"IITA and Touton Ltd &#8211; coffee farmer diversification strategies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iita.org\/\">International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)<\/a> Uganda Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) Team spent a week in Kasese district, western Uganda, in May conducting focus group discussions with more than 150 smallholder coffee, vanilla, and cocoa farmers.<\/p>\n<p>The activity is part of a collaboration between the <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainablefoodlab.org\/\">Sustainable Food Lab<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaid.gov\/\">USAID<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/touton.com\/\">Touton<\/a>, and IITA bringing together the private sector, agricultural researchers, and smallholder farmers to improve smallholder farmer livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p>Kasese \u2013 approximately 7 hours and 370 kilometers west of Uganda\u2019s capital city, Kampala &#8211; is located on the border between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uganda\">Uganda<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Democratic_Republic_of_the_Congo\">Democratic Republic of the Congo<\/a> in the Rwenzori mountains. The mountain range <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/684\/\">includes Africa\u2019s\u00a0third highest\u00a0glacial\u00a0peak after Kilimanjaro\u00a0and Mount Kenya &#8211; Mount Margherita which stands at 5,109 meters. \u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Coffee has been grown in the Rwenzori region for generations. Top-quality Ugandan Arabica coffees are among some of the best in the world (Coffee Review, \u201cTop Coffees of 2017,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coffeereview.com\/top-30-coffees-2017\/page\/2\/\">http:\/\/www.coffeereview.com\/top-30-coffees-2017\/page\/2\/<\/a>). That said, in 2018, it was estimated that only\u00a0<strong>12%\u00a0<\/strong>of households in the Kasese landscape had electricity,\u00a0<strong>29%\u00a0<\/strong>had piped water and only\u00a0<strong>3%\u00a0<\/strong>of households had modern toilet facilities.\u00a0 IITA and Touton are supporting farmers in this landscape to improve their livelihoods from diversified strategies (<a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/007a56633afd4115871670e840ac9617\">https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/007a56633afd4115871670e840ac9617<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/The-IITA-research-team-and-Touton.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2021 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/The-IITA-research-team-and-Touton.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"820\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/The-IITA-research-team-and-Touton.png 820w, http:\/\/blogs.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/The-IITA-research-team-and-Touton-300x150.png 300w, http:\/\/blogs.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/The-IITA-research-team-and-Touton-768x385.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px\" \/><\/a>The IITA research team and Touton field staff jointly conducted focus group discussions with sub-groups of men, women and youth in three sub-counties (Kyondo, Kisinga, and Kyarumba).\u00a0 Meetings took place on the slopes of the mountains in churches, school rooms and in homesteads hosted by the community.\u00a0 The community shared their experiences, challenges and opportunities for improved livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p>This engagement allows IITA and Touton to better understand the different experiences and perceptions of the farming community. Farmers spoke of their challenges in making a decent living from smallholder farming.\u00a0 Issues of land size, low productivity, lack of extension support and knowledge of good agronomical and climate-smart practices, were among some of the issues highlighted.<\/p>\n<p>IITA\u2019s David Mukasa, lead researcher, says: \u201cThere are a number of issues to address such as soil fertility, improved crop varieties, and improved knowledge of good agricultural and climate-smart practices. The IITA team will now consolidate and analyze the data collected and recommend strategies to address the production constraints of the Rwenzori farmers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/womens-focus-group-discussions.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2020 \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/womens-focus-group-discussions-300x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"398\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/womens-focus-group-discussions-300x150.png 300w, http:\/\/blogs.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/womens-focus-group-discussions-768x385.png 768w, http:\/\/blogs.iita.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/womens-focus-group-discussions.png 820w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 398px) 100vw, 398px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Faith Okiror, IITA Communications and Behavioral Change Expert conducted the women\u2019s focus group discussions and said of the trip: \u201cIt is always exciting to interact with the women smallholder coffee farmers whose knowledge adds invaluable insight into the research conducted by IITA. Understanding the challenges and opportunities of the women farmers add context to the research findings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The youth sub-group discussions were conducted by David Amwonya, the IITA Uganda Climate-Smart Agriculture Team Data Analyst who says: \u201cThe focus group discussions will help us validate data collected by Touton in a household survey conducted with a sample of 357 farmers from the same groups.\u201d David will now lead the analysis of the data collected back in Kampala.\u00a0 Preliminary results will be further analyzed by the research team to identify actionable strategies that will contribute to improved farmer livelihoods in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Touton and IITA are committed to continue to partner with Kasese\u2019s smallholder coffee, vanilla and cocoa farmers through their producer organizations in the testing of the co-developed strategies to improve the knowledge and capacity of the farmers for improved livelihoods and climate resilience in the region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Uganda Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) Team spent a week in Kasese district, western Uganda, in May conducting focus group discussions with more than 150 smallholder coffee, vanilla, and cocoa farmers.
