Introducing and delivering IYACU Maize Flour: A nutrient-rich solution to fight malnutrition in Rwanda

To facilitate broader dissemination, farmer promoters, community influencers, and community health workers from Ngororero, Burera, Kayonza, Rulindo, Nyamasheke and Gakenke Districts underwent training and conducted tests to assess the health benefits of IYACU flour.

As part of the AID-I GLR initiative, One Acre Fund (1AF) in Rwanda introduced Iyacu Maize Flour, a game-changing product that is set to revolutionize the Rwandan market. Iyacu is OURS in Kinyarwanda, meaning food for the community.

Enriched with essential vitamins (A and B family) and vital minerals (iron and zinc), Iyacu Maize Flour is a powerful tool in the grassroots fight against household malnutrition. This remarkable product is made from maize grown by dedicated Rwandan farmers, making it a truly homegrown solution to a critical problem, through a staple food.

“We firmly believe that access to nutritious food is a fundamental human right. Iyacu Maize Flour is a crucial step towards fulfilling that right for every Rwandan family,” said Moses Ndayisenga, Market Access Senior Associate at 1AF Rwanda. “For this reason, we’ve rallied a team of dedicated farmer promoters, community influencers, and community health workers who are working tirelessly to ensure that Iyacu Maize Flour becomes a part of every household’s diet.”

IYACU whole maize fortified flour was introduced and distributed to low-income families as a pilot program in Kayonza District, Rwanda.
