Based on their long-term practical experience, CGIAR centers (International Livestock Research Institute [ILRI]; International Potato Center [CIP], Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT [The Alliance], International Rice Research Institute [IRRI]) and the World Vegetable Center (WorldVeg) trained AID-I GLR partners in delivering improved agricultural and livestock practices to farming households across the Great Lakes region.

Capacity-strengthening sessions covered:

  • Best agronomic practice to increase crop yield and quality
  • Improving seed quality and multiplication techniques to ensure high-quality planting material for better yields
  • Dissemination strategies to reach wider audiences, including local farmers
  • Processing techniques for value-added products such as chips, fries, and other processed foods
  • Nutrition education on the importance of a well-balanced diet and how various local crops contribute to improving nutrition.

Trainees gained skills and knowledge in conducting East Coast Fever (ECF) immunization campaigns with the Infection–Treatment Method, cattle fodder conservation techniques (hay and silage making), multi-nutritional lick block production, implementing bovine artificial insemination (AI), early pregnancy diagnosis,  use of digital tools for monitoring and reporting AI activities, and producing climate-smart forage varieties.

These initiatives hold the promise of better livestock health and increased agricultural productivity in the region, benefiting both farmers and their communities.

IRRI conducted variety selection training for rice farmers, seed producers, local administration, rice millers, rice traders, ACORD, CAPAD, IITA, ISABU, ONCCS and National extension officers in Burundi
